Le Dessin industriel est utilisé dans tous les secteurs afin de présenter des concepts aussi bien techniques que pratiques. Pour choisir le métier de dessinateur, il faut s’informer davantage sur le secteur de la fabrication mécanique. En effet, ce métier est présent dans trois catégories d’entreprises : Les usines de fabrication des objets de mécanique industrielle, les firmes de consultation tel que les bureaux d’ingénieurs et les entreprises où la fabrication mécanique est une activité de soutien à la production.

Le programme de DEP en dessin industriel que nous vous offrons est constitué de 25 compétences d’un volume horaire global de 1800 heures. Vous apprendrez durant votre formation à résoudre des problèmes appliqués au dessin industriel, effectuer le relevé et l’interprétation de mesures et déterminer des tolérances; développer les compétences essentielles à la compréhension de la fabrication mécanique.

Choisir d’être dessinateur, c’est décider d’être à la fine pointe de la technologie. C’est également, acquérir des connaissances ouvrant la voie à de multiples spécialités, comme utiliser des logiciels, tel qu’AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS, Inventor etc…

Les étudiants développent les compétences à:

  • La compréhension de la fabrication mécanique;
  • L’interprétation, la réalisation et la correction de dessins de manière à produire des croquis;
  • Exploiter les logiciels appropriés à produire des dessins;

Un diplômé de notre école en Dessin Industriel sera qualifié à préparer des modèles d’ingénierie en travaillant dans des équipes multidisciplinaires d’ingénierie, des architectes et des designers industriels.

* Ce programme de DEP est admissible à l’aide financière aux études du gouvernement du Québec.

Fonctions principales

Les technologues en dessin exercent une partie ou l’ensemble des fonctions suivantes :

• élaborer et préparer des modèles et des dessins d’ingénierie à partir de concepts préliminaires, d’esquisses, de calculs d’ingénierie, de devis descriptifs et autres données ;

• faire fonctionner des postes de conception et de dessin assistés par ordinateur (CAO) ;

• élaborer et préparer des esquisses ;

• remplir la documentation et produire des jeux de dessins ;

• vérifier les dessins afin qu’ils soient conformes aux cahiers des charges et aux données de conception ;

• rédiger des rapports techniques ;

• préparer des contrats et des soumissions ;

• préparer le cahier des charges et l’évaluation des coûts et du matériel de construction ;

• superviser et former d’autres technologues, techniciens et dessinateurs.

Techniciens en dessin exercent une partie ou l’ensemble des fonctions suivantes:

• élaborer et préparer des dessins, des plans, des diagrammes ou des tracés d’ingénierie à partir d’esquisses ;

• faire fonctionner du matériel de dessin assisté par ordinateur ou travailler à une station conventionnelle de dessin.

Admission Requirements for International Students


To be eligible for admission for vocational studies leading to an DEP in Industrial Drafting, international students must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Comparative Evaluation : This is a document issued by Immigration, Diversity and Inclusion Québec. It indicates the level of education equivalent for studies conducted outside of Québec.     • OR

  • Diploma and Transcript: Certified copies of your diploma and transcript from the highest level of education is required. The copies must be translated into French or English. The assessment of the level of study will be completed by the school, the minimum level corresponding to the Quebec school system required is secondary 4;

    • OR

  • General Development Test (GDT) and specific prerequisites: You must present a document stating that you have successfully completed the TDG and specific prerequisites. For the Automobile Mechanics program, you must pass the prerequisites in language of instruction and in mathematics according to the codes shown in the following table:

  • Secondary School Equivalency Test (SSET): This evaluation is composed of seven equivalency exams at the Secondary 5 level. These multiple choice tests, assess your general knowledge in English (grammar), English (reading comprehension), mathematics, French (second language), social studies, economics and natural science. Once you’ve passed the evaluation, an Attestation of Equivalence of Secondary Studies (AESS) at the Secondary 5 level is issued. You must present this certificate to apply for an DEP.

    If you meet the requirements for admission, and you submit all required documents, your file can be assessed. Based on this assessment you will receive a letter of acceptance within 7 to 10 days.

    Admission Requirements for Local Students


    To be eligible for admission for vocational studies leading to an DEP in Industrial Drafting, students who are Canadian or permanent residents must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Persons holding a Secondary School Diploma or its recognized equivalent.

    • OR

  • Persons who are at least 16 years of age on September 30 of the school year in which their training is to begin and have earned the Secondary IV credits in language of instruction, second language and mathematics in the programs of study established by the Minister, or have been granted recognition of equivalent learning.

  • Persons who are at least 18 years of age upon entry into the program and have the following functional prerequisites: the successful completion of the General Development Test (see the following table), or recognition of equivalent learning:

    1. What are the program objectives?
    The general objectives for a student in the Industrial drafting program will develop the skills required to:

  • Determine the information to be included in the drawings
  • Understand mechanical manufacturing
  • Produce sketches and drawings
  • Support/Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams such as engineering teams, architects or industrial designers, or they may work independently
  • For a smooth transition between school and the workplace.

    • 2. What is the nature of work in this industry?
    Industrial drafting is used in all industrial sectors to transmit technical and practical ideas. All manufactured objects have drawings, and it is the responsibility of the industrial drafter to create and accurately capture these objects onto computer screens, using specialized software programs, such as Autocad. They are responsible to reproduce a design, produce a mechanical drawing, identify the dimensions of a mechanical part, update a drawing, or produce an assembly drawing.

    3. What are the main characteristics of the occupation?
  • A thorough understanding of computer and computer programs;
  • Adept in mathematical concepts (geometric calculations);
  • An understanding of the assembly processes for mechanical parts;
  • Easy to read and interpret blueprints to meet the needs of the client;
  • Know how to represent/communicate the materials used in the design;
  • Well versed in the language associated with the machining methods in order to understand customer expectations.

    Industrial Drafting is used in all sectors consisting of both technical and practical concepts. In choosing this type of trade, it is advantageous to be informed on the manufacturing sector. The trade operates in three types of business categories: the manufacturing of mechanical objects in industrial sectors, consulting firms such as engineering, and companies’ where manufacturing is a fundamental activity to their production.

    The Industrial Drafting DEP program consists of 25 competencies , with a total of 1800 hours. Throughout the program, you will develop the skills to: solve problems related to industrial drafting, taking and interpreting measurements and develop the skills necessary to understand the manufacturing.

    It is important to distinguish the difference between a designer and a drafter. The designer is the one who schematizes the mechanical parts by creating the overall drawings for assembly and detail. The drafter, also known as draftsperson, drafting technologist, drafting technician, computer-assisted drafting (CAD) technician, is the one who is called to improve or adapt existing products, in addition to designing new ones, or may be put in charge of projects . A designer can move up and work a few years in their field before entering the drafting profession.

    Choosing a career in drafting, is deciding to work with leading edge technology. It means acquiring detailed knowledge in a multitude of specialties across varying sectors, as well as the skill use of numerous state of the art computer software programs, such as AutoCAD.

    Students develop the skills to:
     A graduate from our Industrial Drafting program will be qualified to prepare engineering designs, drawings and related technical information, in multidisciplinary engineering teams or in support of engineers, architects or industrial designers, or they may work independently.

    *This DEP program is eligible for the program of student financial assistance from the Government of Quebec.

    Drafting technologists perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Develop and prepare engineering designs and drawings from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specification sheets and other data

  • Operate computer-assisted design (CAD) and drafting workstations

  • Develop and prepare design sketches

  • Complete documentation packages and produce drawing sets

  • Check and verify design drawings to conform to specifications and design data

  • Write technical reports

  • Prepare contracts and tender documents

  • Prepare construction specifications, costs and material estimates

  • Supervise and train other technologists, technicians and drafters.

    • Drafting technicians perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Develop and prepare engineering drawings, plans, diagrams or layouts from sketches.

  • Operate computer-assisted drafting equipment or a conventional drafting station.
